“Hello Ms. Ebony Mikayla Emerson. I was really heartbroken to not to hear from you after you received the beautiful flowers I sent you. If I didn’t know any better I would think you’re avoiding me. And it would seem that you are still playing hard to get the same way you were years ago. Except this time I won’t be brushed aside. I’m in Los Angeles now and I’m leaving my number again. If I don’t hear from you by noon tomorrow, you can expect a visit from an old friend as soon as I get back in the Arizona heat.”
I listened to Detective Travis Scott leave a local L.A. number while I was staring at the machine the whole time as if it were a ticking bomb. Now I knew for sure that Travis’ intentions were not of a pure origin. My days of being in compliance of someone else’s wishes and demands were long gone. Ebony Emerson ran her own show nowadays and no one was going to take that independence and security away from me. He was one foul cop and I began to hate him again for what he had tried to pull on me in the hotel room the morning of the funeral.
I made my way to my bedroom and ended up in the walk in closet. I turned on the light and moved to the safe nestled into the wall at the end of the walkway. Punching in the code, the small door slid open. Nestled on the top shelf were expensive jewels I’d purchased for myself. The middle shelf held important papers that normal people might have in a security box at a bank along with over one hundred thousand dollars in cash. On the bottom shelf there were the three guns I was licensed to carry, along with boxes of bullets for each. I took out four clips for the small three-eighty pistol and a nine Smith & Wesson. I sat on the floor inside of the closet and loaded each clip with the correct bullets. I then took out the guns and sat them on the floor beside my feet. I closed the door to the safe activating the lock. I slid one of clips into each of the guns. Out of the closet I put the extra clips on the nightstand beside my bed. I put the nine under my pillow on the bed and then made my way back to the den, holding the three eighty in hand.
I reclaimed my spot on the couch and I nestled the gun in between the seat cushions. Recovering my body with a throw blanket, I began to relax once again. I was unsure if it was the wine or the pure adrenaline pumping in my heart but I felt that I was prepared for the dear old Detective who couldn’t let go of an infatuation. I decided in my heart that I would not hesitate to take him out of this world if he tried to shake my hand the wrong way.
